Tropicana Essentials Probiotics® FAQ’s
- 1.How many probiotics/live and active cultures are in each serving? What is the recommended dose of probiotics?
Each 250 mL serving of Tropicana Essentials Probiotics® delivers more than one billion live and active cultures – also known as colony forming units (CFU) – of B. lactis HN019 to your gut. While there is actually no set recommended dose of probiotics, clinical studies do show that one billion CFU is an effective dose of B. lactis HN019.
- 2.What are probiotics?
According to the World Health Organization/Food and Agriculture Organization, probiotics are live micro-organisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit. Probiotics are typically considered the “good” bacteria that supplement your body’s natural microbiome – an integral part of gut health. Commonly found in yogurts and kombuchas, Tropicana® is bringing probiotics to the refrigerated juice aisle.
- 3.How are probiotics beneficial to me? Is daily consumption of probiotics necessary to receive benefits? How do they work?
Probiotics are good for your gut! They boost your body’s natural microbiome and may aid in the breakdown of non-digestible components of your diet to produce beneficial compounds that can be converted into energy, out-compete the “bad” bacteria and interact with the cells in your intestine. To supplement your established microbiome, probiotics should be consumed regularly. New Tropicana Essentials Probiotics® is a delicious and convenient way to add more probiotics into your daily routine.
- 4.What strain of probiotics do we use in our formula? Do all probiotics function in the same way?
Tropicana Essentials Probiotics® contains Bifidobacterium lactisHN019. While probiotics can be grouped by similar traits or functions, each strain has its own unique skill and function. For example, Bifidobacteria produce lactic acid.
- 5.Is it possible to consume too many probiotics?
It is unlikely that you would consume too many probiotics, they would simply be excreted out of your system. However, we do recommend consulting your physician before beginning a high dose regimen.
- 6.Are more probiotics always better?
Not necessarily. Clinical research shows that each strain has its own effective dose. Different strains should not be compared by the numbers.
- 7.Does all of your juice have probiotics?
No, Tropicana Essentials Probiotics® is a new product offering from the juice brand you love featuring enhanced nutritional benefits like added probiotics. We are excited to bring probiotics to the refrigerated juice aisle. All of our other juices are still available, but do not contain probiotics.
- 8.Is there dairy in these products?
If allergens are present it will be stated on the package to comply with the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Regulations of Canada. Please refer to ingredient and allergen statements on the label.
- 9.Are these probiotics like the probiotics found in yogurt?
It would depend on what probiotics are in the yogurt, if any. The probiotics found in new Tropicana Essentials Probiotics® are live and active cultures of B. lactis HN019. However, the live cultures often found in yogurt – the ones that develop its characteristic “yogurt flavor” – are not always probiotics, as these cultures do not confer a health benefit, which is how the World Health Organization/Food and Agriculture Organization defines probiotics.
- 10.Do we naturally have bacteria/good bacteria in our body?
We do! We all have natural colonies of micro-organisms in our body, particularly in the digestive system. This colony is called your gut microbiome. Probiotics are the term given to isolated, beneficial micro-organisms that are consumed to boost your microbiome.
- 11.What is the difference between live active cultures and probiotics?
Live cultures are exactly what they sound like – live cultures of micro-organisms. Probiotics are also live micro-organisms, but they are the kind that confer a health benefit, according to the World Health Organization/Food and Agriculture Organization.
- 12.Are probiotics safe for children? Are they safe for pregnant or breast feeding women?
Yes, many Bifidobacteria probiotics, including the B. lactis HN019 in our juices, have been studied in pregnant and nursing women and children and found to be safe.
- 13.What are prebiotics and what is their connection to probiotics?
Prebiotics are food for probiotics and your microbiome. They are fibres that are not digested by your intestines but can be broken down and used as energy by probiotics.
- 14.Are probiotics better when you get them from pills or food?
The effects of B. lactis HNO19 – the probiotics found in Tropicana Essentials Probiotics® – have been studied in both pills and food, and both forms have been found to be effective.
- 15.Are Tropicana Essentials Probiotics® vegan?
Yes, all flavours of Tropicana Essentials Probiotics® are vegan.

- 20.How do Probiotics work?
Probiotics may aid in the breakdown of non-digestible components of your diet to produce beneficial compounds that can be converted into energy, out-compete the “bad” bacteria and interact with the cells in your intestine.
- 21.Why is there settling in the Probiotics juices? Is it due to the Probiotics?
Settling is a natural process of the juices blended in Tropicana Essentials Probiotics®, not the probiotics. Shake well to blend before pouring.
